Day 93 Tuesday 13th September
We were up very early this morning and decided to get moving quickly as it was very cold and we thought we'd be warmer in the car. Lyn and Steve weren't bothered by the cold and as they are not in any hurry to get home, took a more leisurely pace. We said our goodbyes to them around 7.30am and headed off on the long stretch across the Nullarbor. For about the first 200kms or so we had not reached the actual Nullarbor. It was raining and the vegetation was made up of small scrubby bushes, low trees and green grasses. It was obvious that many animals were thriving on the abundance of food, particularly wallabies and kangaroos. Rob counted 60 dead animals, mainly kangaroos on the road in 100 kms of travel. It was very sad but obviously there are many animals around. There comes apoint travelling along the Eyre Highway when the vegetation completely changes. All of a sudden there are no trees at all and only very low grasses and bushes. The animals also disappear and so there is no roadkill. It is then you know you are on the Nullarbor. We called into a couple of spots along the way and one of them was the start of the Great Australian Bight. We saw the spectacular cliffs with the ocean crashing into as far as the eye could see to the east. We have stopped at the Nullarbor Roadhouse for the evening and have power here and lovely amenities.
